Alex Bernath, currently residing in Cologne, Germany, is an international touring and recording drummer specializing in styles ranging from Funk, Jazz, Hip Hop, Pop and Fusion. Musicality and Groove are the two most important pillars he builds his drumming on.
Robert Coleman (James Brown guitarist) stated once: “Alex is so steady and funky, if James Brown was here tonight, Alex would be his new drummer”.
In the past years, Alex had the pleasure to work with greats such as :
Chuck Leavell (Rolling Stones). Fred Wesley (James Brown/Tina Turner) Jamal Thomas (Maceo Parker/SOS Band) and Branford Marsalis (Miles Davis/Sting), Rodney "Skeet" Curtis (P-Funkadelic/Maceo Parker)
He has learned play the drums from, and is therefore influenced by the styles of:
Keith Carlock (Steely Dan/Toto/Sting), Jamal Thomas, Stanton Moore (Dr.John/Galactic).
Alex's compositional work is internationally acknowledged, it's been reviewed in famous Jazz magazines (Jazzthing/Soultrainonline.de), Drum magazines (Sticks), it was listed in "Deutsche Schallplattenkritik's Bestenliste" and voted "Best Jazz Album of Poland 2018".

How it all started:
Growing up in classical orchestras and Big Bands since the age of 12, Alex went to study Jazz-drums at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague (NL) at the age of 19, in 2005. During his study he received drum-lessons by Eric Ineke (Dexter Gordon/Lee Konitz) and Stefan Kruger (Caro Emerald). The peak of his studies was performing with Branford Marsalis (Miles Davis/Sting) and the Royal Conservatory Big Band. After graduating with a Bachelor degree, he continued his musical journey towards Funk music with legendary drummer Jamal Thomas (Maceo Parker/SOS Band). This acquaintance lead to forming The Jamal Thomas Band (JTB), in which Alex is co-founder, producer, drummer and musical director alongside Jamal.
In 2013 they released their first album “Future” and toured with Fred Wesley (James Brown/Tina Turner) thereafter. 2018 will be the release of the new album “Funk Don’t Move, It Grooves” in which Alex had the pleasure to work with musical greats such as Chuck Leavell (Rolling Stones), Rodney “Skeet” Curtis (Parliament Funkadelic) and Bruno Speight (Maceo Parker). Until the release, the band performs in Switzerland, Belgium, Holland, Germany, Morocco and Ukraine.
From 2012 – 2013, Alex toured through France and played regular gigs at one of the most reputable Jazz clubs of Paris (Caveau de la Huchette) with Boogie Woogie pianist ”Boogie Phil” from Belgium. Since 2015 Alex is performing with the international Worldjazz/Funk group, the “Wojtek Justyna TreeOh!”. They tour in Poland and Holland. In 2016, Alex organized and played a series of concerts for 2x Grammy nominated Blues singer/guitarist Big Mike and the Booty Papas (USA) including 24 gigs in the Netherlands.
Alongside the tours and recordings, Alex continues to teach drums privately and was invited to give masterclasses at Percussion Festivals in Russia,Portugal, Poland, Netherlands and Germany.
In 2016, Alex has relocated to Cologne, Germany and met drummer Anders Astrand at a percussion festival in Portugal. The result of that encounter is a new Trio-album recorded with Mikael Berglund in Stockholm during the early year winter of 2017. In the meantime Alex had the priviledge to sign endorsement deals with Zildjian and Vic Firth and as a result of moving to Cologne, Alex started touring with German Blues-singer and guitarist Timo Gross.
In the early summer of 2017 Alex received drumlessons from Keith Carlock and Stanton Moore.
2018 was the release of Jamal Thomas Bands "Funk Don't Move" album (Isolde Records). A release tour through Germany was followed by reviews of internationally accredited Jazz and Soul Magazines. 2018 ended with a USA Tour with Big Mike. In 2019, Alex performed the most concerts of his life yet: Tours through Australia, New Zealand, Indonesia, Africa, South Korea, the balkan states and many more.
2020 started out with a South America tour before Corona ended the plans for the time being.
